A’zalia Delancey Coffey was a popular musician, composer, and arranger who had a significant influence on the music industry, particularly during the late 60s and early 70s. Born in Chicago in 1930, he was raised by his father and uncle, an early influence on his love for music. His career as a musician began during his teenage years in Chicago where he was a member of multiple bands. Later, as his skills and fame began to gain wider recognition, he moved to Los Angeles, where he continued to assert himself in the music industry. He worked as a producer, writer and composer, and his contributions to the music industry earned him much respect over the years.

Coffey’s Musical Career

Before his break in the music industry, Coffey was a touring musician, and he provided backup support to renowned names like Sam Cooke, Willie Dixon and Etta James. Being a session musician, Coffey was practically on call, ready to provide musical support to any project that required it, also making some freelance contributions that he could add to his portfolio of works. His familiarity with different genres and skillful playing enabled him to become an in-demand session musician.

Coffey’s career breakthrough came in 1969, when he wrote the lyrics for the hit song “Soulful Strutt” which charted at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The song was performed by a group called Young-Holt Unlimited, and its success propelled Coffey’s career as a songwriter and producer. He then struck a deal with CBS to produce a substantial body of albums, which earned him even more recognition as a leading musician and producer. Over the years, Coffey worked with several notable artists including Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight.

As a Music Producer

Coffey is best remembered as a producer, and his leadership in the music industry remains revered to date. His uncanny ability to produce captivating music that proved to be commercial hits earned him a deal with CBS which opened up immense opportunities for him.

In addition to producing music, Coffey often played multiple instruments concurrently during his recordings. For example, he was known to play the piano, organ and flute simultaneously, making it hard to believe that one person could be capable of such feats. This style of producing music was very unique and contributed to the captivating sounds of his compositions.

One of Coffey’s most acclaimed works is his composition of the album “The Iron Horse”. The album was the result of a collaboration with legendary jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan, as well as Grady Tate on drums and Gerald Garrett on bass. The project was very successful, becoming a highly sought after album. This project is remembered to this day; its influence was so widespread that many consider it to be a classic in the jazz genre.

Coffey’s Legacy

Despite his success earning him recognition, Coffey’s career was short-lived due to the onset of Parkinson’s disease which unfortunately claimed his life in 1985.

Despite his death, Coffey’s contributions to the music industry continue to be celebrated, as his albums have been re-released multiple times. His legacy has also inspired several contemporary jazz musicians, as his style of playing multiple instruments was a rare skill that required a high level of musical dexterity. Furthermore, his role as a music producer has also been influential to aspiring producers.
